The "stick" is used for cleaning your sand paper.  I leave my sander running, turn it upside down - facing me - and GENTLY run the stick from the center of the diskto the outside.  You will see the sanded material remove from the disk. 

By cleaning your sand paper after every use, your sand paper should last 10-14 times longer.
